The prewind feature is a film loading technique used by motor driven film cameras. Upon loading the camera, the film is fully unloaded onto the take-up spool. When exposure are made the film is advanced into the film canister. This prevents fogging the exposed film accidentally when opening the film back.

This feature is present on many amateur beginner cameras as well as cameras that can expose various size frames on the same roll. Example APS film, half frame, and panoramic cameras.
