The Canon EOS 7D is a mid-range digital SLR (DSLR) camera. Canon announced the 7D on 1 September 2009. It has a rather long life in the consumer DSLR marketplace, still available after 4 years (10.2013), most similar cameras usually get replaced in 2 or 3 years.

The imaging sensor is a Canon designed 18-Megapixel APS-C size CMOS sensor. This produces photos with a maximum resolution of 5184 x 3456. There is also a movie mode which can record in 1920x1080 with framerates of 24/25/30 fps. MPEG-4 AVC compressed format in a MOV container. It uses Compact Flash for media storage. The LCD screen is 3" with 920,000 dots. Power is with a rechargeable LP-E6 Lithium-Ion battery. It can use an optional BG-E7 battery grip which can use six AA batteries or two LP-E6 batteries.

The camera firmware was surprisingly updated in 2012 three years after launch. It provided a few improvements such as the shooting buffer from 15 to 25 Raws, adjustable maximum Auto ISO, movie mode audio level adjustment, Jpeg re-sizing, and compatibility with the GP-E2 GPS module.
