Houghton-Butcher Manufacturing Co. Ltd. was the manufacturer of the camera brand Ensign. It was based London. It derived from the merger of the old optical company Houghton with W. Butcher and Sons Ltd. in the year 1915. In 1939 it introduced the Ensign Ful-Vue box camera, one of the most popular cameras of its time in the UK. In 1945 the company should be liquidated, but with film maker Elliot and Sons Ltd. (film brand "Barnet") as new partner it survived for a while as Barnet Ensign Ltd. . In 1948 Ross and Barnet Ensign were merged to Barnet Ensign Ross (later Ross-Ensign).
