Infrared counters are used in the transport systems of some film cameras. The light is usually emitted with a LED and is used to count the number of sprockets for advancing the film. The advantage is a better, faster, and more accurate frame counting. This makes it easier to interchange films via the mid-roll rewind feature, without having to worry about overlapped multiple exposed frames. The main drawback of this system is the use or IR light which may fog some infrared films.
