Infrared counters are used in the transport systems of some film cameras. The light is usually emitted with a LED and is used to count the number of sprockets for advancing the film. The advantage is a better, faster, and more accurate frame counting. This makes it easier to interchange films via the mid-roll rewind feature without having to worry about overlapped multiple exposed frames. The main drawback of this system is the use of IR light which may fog some types infrared films. Not all cameras are affected the same way, some only have fogging in the sprocket area and does not affect picture area. Other issues may also cause fogging of IR film, for example a majority of Minolta AF cameras also require changing the film pressure plate.
