Canon introduced their first IXUS camera along with the introduction of APS film in 1996. The IXUS name was used in Europe; the range was sold under the names ELPH in the US and IXY in Japan. The IXY & IXUS names possibly came from the Information Exchange (IX) system used in APS to store print data.

The range was very successful, and the names and some of the design points were retained into the digital IXUS/ELPH/IXY cameras.
