The 420/SL was an SLR accepting 42mm screw lenses offered by Vivitar in 1974. Compared to the Vivitar 450/SLD it lacks the spot-metering feature, and was the more affordable choice. The camera was actually manufactured by Cosina, perhaps based on the Hi-Lite 402.
Stop down metering is activated by pressing the shutter release halfway and adjusting settings until the needle at the viewfinder edge is centered in a small bracket. The viewfinder can be returned to maximum brightness by pressing the aperture re-open button on the front of the camera body. The 420/SL has a battery-check lamp and a locking collar around the shutter release, neither found on the otherwise similar Vivitar 400/SL.
