The Canon PowerShot G1 was Canon's first "prosumer" compact zoom model. It was released at the tail end of 2000. The success of the G1 led to many subsequent G cameras, continuing to the present day (2011) and the PowerShot G12.

The camera features a 3.2 MP 1/1.8" CCD sensor. The lens is a 7 to 21mm (34 mm to 102 mm) zoom, 8 elements in 7 groups with an aperture of f2 to f2.5 with a filter thread of 58mm. 1.8" flip and tilt TFT LCD screen. A WL-D100 IR remote control is provided to trip the shutter as well as television playback control. It uses CompactFlash for image storage. A 16MB card is usually provided with the camera. It is powered by a Canon BP-511 7.4 V, 1100 mAh Lithium-Ion battery pack.

The camera was succeeded by the Canon PowerShot G2 that was released in 2001.
