In 1977 Alpa was still producing its premium, hand-assembled, Alpa 11si in Switzerland. But the company made an odd effort to branch out into the mid-price SLR segment, by collaborating with Chinon to offer the Si 2000.
This was a restyled version of the Chinon CE II Memotron, including its use of the M42 thread mount. Advertising boasted of the sturdy die-cast zinc top panel, which was specific to the Alpa version. The Chinon offered an unusual autoexposure scheme, where shutter timing is set automatically using a light reading taken in the instant after the lens stops down (there is no open-aperture metering).
