Incorporating all the refinements of 1968's Alpa 10d, the Alpa 11e and its successors were the final evolution of the 35mm SLR series from Alpa. The 11e launched in 1971 and successor models continued into the 1980s (in dwindling numbers). The "11" platform also became the basis for several specialized technical models not aimed at the general photographer.

The headline feature of the initial 11e was a change to a "transistorized" meter display which illuminated over- and underexposure lamps, visible both in the viewfinder and also on the camera's top deck. Later versions including the Alpa 11el made small changes to the viewfinder display, and CdS meter cells were replaced with improved Silicon photodiodes in the Alpa 11si.

The red crest on the front of the pentaprism seen in photos here was only used for overseas models.
