In September 2018 Nikon answered the challenge which was given since 2013 by the 35mm (= "full-frame" = small format) CSCs of the Sony α system. The Z lens bayonet was introduced with the Nikon Z 7 and the Z 6 camera bodies. The Z 7 offers a fast high resolution sensor. Immediately Nikon matched the state of art of Sony's similar products since the camera maker had experience with CSCs thru its Nikon 1 system, and with full-frame high-res sensors thru its DSLR system.

In 2020 Nikon introduced the improved version Nikon Z 7II which includes an animal-eye-following autofocus mode. Both body variants are splash-proof.
