The Leica S system was launched in 2008. Leica camera decided to abandon the R system and, instead, develop the completely new S digital SLR system with a high resolution Kodak CCD sensor larger than the 35mm format. The sensor measures 30×45mm with 37.5 megapixel resolution. An extensive range of autofocus lenses has been developed.
The camera is effectively medium format, although somewhat smaller than most other medium format cameras. See also the successor models the S2 and S3.
