The Canon EOS 1D was the company's first "flagship" DSLR designed entirely in-house, released in 2001. (The earlier EOS-D2000 had been a hybrid, adapting a sensor back from Kodak to a Canon film SLR body.)
A large and heavy camera with an integral bottom grip, its 4 megapixel sensor was impressive when new. The same basic "1D" form factor has continued up to the present day (2011) with the Canon EOS 1D Mark IV.
