The EOS R is a mirrorless digital camera made by Canon in 2018. Following the success of the Canon EOS M and its successors (mirrorless APS-C cameras), the EOS R is a full-frame equivalent. It has a dedicated new lens mount, the RF mount. Canon did not make many lenses in this mount (though more than were made for the APS-C cameras): as of 2020, Canon's online store offers a core set of just eleven RF lenses (see below), but there are adapters so that users can use the large range of EF and EF-S lenses still being made for EOS DSLRs. In fact, as with other mirrorless cameras, the shallowness of the body allows adapters to be made for a wide range of lenses from many makers and systems, and many owners enjoy using the camera like this.

The EOS R has a full-frame (36x24mm) CMOS sensor with 30.3 million (effective) pixels (30.1 megapixels). Any of the sensor's pixels can be used for both imaging and for phase-difference autofocus (Canon's Dual Pixel CMOS AF (DPAF)), and 5655 autofocus points can be used, covering about 88% of the frame (the camera's inbuilt AF settings, or setting the AF points from the touch-screen, will use one of 143 AF areas).

The camera has an electronic VF with 3.69 million pixels, and an 8cm tilt/swivel touchscreen display with 2.1 million pixels.

The sensitivity of the server can be set between ISO 100 and 40 000. The camera can meter from EV -6 to EV 18 (only to EV -4 for movies).

The camera uses SD, SDHC and SDXC memory cards. It uses Canon's battery LP-E6N (or third-party equivalent).
