Tokina Optical Co. Ltd. is a Japanese lens maker.

History

Tokina Optical Co. Ltd. is a Japanese lens maker. The company was established in Shinjuku, Tokyo in May of 1950 as Tokyo Optical Equipment Manufacturing. The phonetic translation into English, Tokyo Koki, was sometimes used on early lenses made for export to the United States[1] (note that there is another company that used the English moniker Tokyo Koki.) The company was founded by former Nikon engineers as an OEM manufacturer and originally made lenses for other companies, such as Ponder and Best (later Vivitar). In the early 1970's the company began selling lenses under it's own brand name, Tokina.[2] In May of 1971 the company changed its name to Tokina Optical Co., Ltd. In March of 1999 it was purchased by Kenko.[3][4]. Tokina uses optical glass made by Hoya. The three companies, Tokina, Hoya, and Kenko, have a combined US distributor named THK Photo Products, Inc.
