The Nikon Coolpix 995 is a 3.1 megapixel digital camera and part of the Coolpix series announced by the Nikon Corporation in April 2001 (introduced in July). The body is in two halves, one half with the lens, sensor, flash and optical viewfinder, the other with the controls and viewing screen. There is a swivel joint between them, so that the LCD screen can be angled for convenient viewfinding. Settings are shown on a second display on the top panel.

The power/mode switch is around the shutter release; zooming is controlled by two buttons which fall under the right thumb. Focus and exposure can be automatic, but there is manual override; above the zoom buttons is a wheel for manually adjusting these settings. On the right-hand end is a door giving access to the CompactFlash card, and a rubber cover hiding the USB and video connectors.

The 995 is an upgraded Coolpix 990, adding a flip-up flash (to reduce red-eye; the 990 flash was very close to the lens), a faster shutter (1/2300), noise reduction and support for a more sophisticated, rechargeable battery instead of the 990's AA cells. The case has a plastic shell, in place of the 990's alloy castings - and generally gives a more bulky impression. Retained from the 990 are the control layout and the tiny, flimsy USB connector.

  • Lens: 8-32mm (4x zoom), f2.6-5.1
  • Shutter speed: 8-1/2300s (+B up to 60s)
  • ISO range: 100-800
  • Image sizes: 2048x1536 (4:3), 1600x1200, 1280x960, 1024x768 (PC/XGA), 640x480 (VGA),2048x1360 (3:2)
  • Power: EN-EL1 battery or external AC supply
  • Storage: CompactFlash (I or II)
  • Self-timer: 3 or 10 secs

There was a version with a purple insert in the finger grip, in place of the red one shown here.
