Revision as of 11:44, 23 April 2018
The K mount was introduced by Pentax in 1975 of their K series bodies. It was used by other makers as well. It has the same flange/film distance as the M42 screw mount and was introduced as open standard, meaning that a handful camera makers soon offered variants of their SLR bodies with K-mount, for example Cosina, Chinon and Zenit. The mount standard has been revised and extended several times (e.g. to add autofocus) and remains in use on Pentax's 2015 DSLRs.
Viewing a K-mount lens from the rear (with the focus index mark at 12 o'clock), the aperture stop-down lever is at about 4 o'clock; and between 8 and 10 o'clock is a slider reflecting the current aperture-ring position, to allow for open-aperture light metering. These features are universal to all K-mount lenses. An autofocus KAF lens also adds a drive-screw slot at about 8 o'clock.
In 1983 Pentax introduced the Super Program (Super A), and with it a new series of Pentax-A lenses. These were a modification to the K mount allowing the camera body to set the aperture (e.g. for shutter-priority or programmed autoexposure); and accordingly these add a locking "A" position to the aperture ring. There are also a series of electrical contacts between 4 and 6 o'clock. These lenses remain well-supported by current Pentax DSLRs, i.e. allowing open-aperture metering and correctly recording the selected f/stop into an image's EXIF data.
Unfortunately this KA mount was not the same system chosen by Ricoh to add a P mode to their cameras and lenses. Ricoh-P-compatible lenses have a small protruding pin at about 7 o'clock. (Independent lens makers were able to create K-mount lenses which accommodated either Ricoh or Pentax camera bodies.) There is a serious hazard in attempting to mount any "Ricoh pin" lens on any autofocus K-mount body, as the pin can drop into the focus drive screw and become stuck.
