Hewlett-Packard (HP) are a large electronics and computing equipment company, founded by Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard in Palo Alto, California in 1939[1]. The company began by making electronic instruments, starting with a laboratory oscillator. Early on, they made cameras to record images from their instruments, such as oscilloscopes.

HP were among the first companies to produce mass-market laser- and inkjet-printers - both in c.1984[2].

In 1997, HP introduced the Photosmart system - a combination of digital camera, scanners for existing photos and negatives and photo printers. The firmware of the early HP camera models was based on the Digita operating system.
