The Fujifilm FinePix F40fd (aka Fujifilm FinePix F45fd) was the successor to the Fujifilm FinePix F20. Like the F20 its Film speed was limited to 2000 ISO and manual controls were limited. More often it is compared with the FinePix F31fd which it replaced in the market. In comparison, the F40fd generally has superior image quality up to ISO 400, noisier but more detailed images at ISO 800, and less detailed and noisier images at ISO 1600. The F40fd employs less noise reduction than some previous F series cameras; this makes images look poor when viewed at 100% but retains more overall detail in practical usage.

White balance was improved over previous F series models and saw a bias to more natural, warmer tones verses the cool tones favoured by its predecessors. The F40fd had colour quality among the very best of compact cameras in the year of its release.

The Fujifilm FinePix F47fd is identical to the F40fd except its sensor is 9.0 megapixels instead of 8.3. It was released a few months after the F40fd and was only sold in some countries. A firmware update is available from Fujifilm to add support for SDHC cards to this camera.
