The Canon EOS-1D C was announced on April 12, 2012 for a suggested retail price of US$15,000. It was stated to be the world's first 4K resolution DSLR, and it was meant to be the most versatile DSLR for both photo and video. It is the latest in the Canon EOS-1 line and has the same form factor as all EOS-1 cameras since the Canon EOS-1. It shares many of its photographic capabilities with the Canon EOS-1D X, but they are quite different in videographic capabilities.

It takes the same EF-mount lenses as all Canon EOS cameras and is compatible with the Canon CN-E mount for Canon cinema lenses.

The 1D C features an 18.1 megapixel full-frame sensor that outputs an image of 5184 x 3456. It can capture 4K video as a motion JPEG of 4096 x 2160, or HD video (H.264) of 1920 x 1080.

It has 61 AF points and multiple cross-type AF points, depending on the lens used.

Video capabilities

The 1D C can capture 4K video at 24fps or HD video at up to 60fps. The 4K video is uncompressed, making it a "raw" output of the sensor. It also has an HDMI-out port for live viewing of the video feed.

Compared to the Canon EOS-1D X

The Canon EOS-1D X was originally announced in March 2012 at a list price of US$6,799, less than half of the original list price of the 1D C, announced a month later.

Most, if not all, of the 1D X's photographic capabilities are present on the 1D C. However, the 1D X is unable to capture 4K video. The 1D X can capture the same HD video as the 1D C, but it can only capture up to 30fps as compared to the 1D C's 60.
