It is unclear why this camera's model designation, unique among Chinon's SLRs, begins with an "A" and not a "C." As far as can be determined, it is twin of the Chinon CM-1 or CM-3 with some minor styling differences (e.g. the pentaprism housing is wider).

This model is made to accept 42mm screw lenses and the user activates its stop down metering with a half press on the shutter release. Colored LEDs on the right edge of the viewfinder eyepiece indicate under/correct/over exposure for the current camera settings.

This model is designed to accept the accessory 2-frames-per-second Chinon Power Winder (shown here, and described in the manual). This offered a couple of advanced options such as an intervalometer and the ability to count down a predetermined number of frames.
