The origin of the branding "Hikari" is unclear—it has also appeared on some dashcams and security cameras—although it is certainly unrelated to Nikon's glass factory in Japan. Hikari ("光" or "ひかり") is the Japanese word for light.

In any case the Hikari 2002 is a familar entry-level 35mm SLR, sourced from a Chinese factory and seen under various other names. The best-known of these is the Vivitar V3800N. This model uses a match-LED display in the viewfinder to guide manual exposure settings, and accepts K mount lenses. Two features less common on other entry-level models are a depth-of-field preview button and a provision for double exposures.
