The Seves (セベス) is a Japanese 4.5×6 folding camera made around 1936.
Description
The camera is a strut-folder, with scissor struts on each side of the front standard. There is a folding optical finder above the middle of the top plate and the advance knob is on the left end. There is a button on the right of the viewfinder, probably used to release the front standard. The back is hinged to the right and the back latch is covered by a leather handle.
The lens has two elements and a maximal aperture of f/8 and it is fixed-focus.[1] The shutter only has Bulb and Instant settings.[2]
Advertisements
The Seves was advertised by GRC Gōmei-gaisha as a new product in the July 1936 issue of Shashin Salon.[3] The price was ¥17. It is the only advertisement mentioned by Kokusan kamera no rekishi. This source also says that the shutter is called GRC Original.[4] In the advertising picture, it seems that the shutter plate has a marking beginning with GRC at the top and is written SEVES at the bottom.
The Seves also appears in a leaflet published by Ōhashi (pictured in this page), presenting various products of the company, including the Hope, Baby Light and Roll Light Ref cameras. The Seves is not explicitly mentioned as made by Ōhashi, but this is what is suggested.[5]
