The Rolleicord Ia is an early model in a long line of Rolleicords which started in 1933 and ended in 1977 and were produced by Franke & Heidecke and later on by Rollei-Werke in Braunschweig, Germany.

It is a medium format TLR camera that uses 120 type Rollfilm. 12 6x6cm square images can be captured for each roll of 120 film.

By using an optional Rolleikin 1 adapter 35mm film cartridges can be used.
There is also a Plate adapter available which gives one 6x6 image on a 6.5x9cm size glassplate.

Major differences with its predecessor, the I, is that it has an automated stop at the end of the filmtransport and a framecounter on the right side.

All Ia's were equipped with a Carl Zeiss Jena Triotar 1:4.5 7.5cm lens. Viewing lens is a Heidoscop-Anastigmat 1:4 7.5cm.
Both lenses can be equiped with 28.5mm push-on filters/hood.

The shutter is a Deckel Compur CR00 offering speeds from 1 till 1/300 second, a T and a B setting.

The Ia's were produced in 3 different versions (models).

Rolleicord Ia version 1

This first version was produced from 1936 till 1937, about 9.459 units.
It has a metal bridge between taking and viewing lenses.
It is also equiped with a 45 degree mirror in the viewing hood for viewing the ground screen at eye-level.

Rolleicord Ia version 2

This second version was produced from 1937 till 1938, about 10.200 units.
It has no bridge between the lenses and has a normal Sports finder for looking at eye-level.

Rolleicord Ia version 3

This third version was produced from 1937 till 1947, about 12.150 units.
Major difference with the earlier versions is that the Rolleicord name shield now is in relief.

Rolleicord Ia Polizei version

A special version of the Ia version 3 was produced (c.1939, about 500 units) for the German Police (Polizei).
This version has a Carl Zeiss Jena Triotar 1:3.5 7.5cm taking lens. Viewing lens is a Heidoscop-Anastigmat 1:3.2 7.5cm.
