The Pentacon electra was introduced in 1960 by Pentacon. The camera was designed for using SL System 35mm film capsules instead of the common type 135 film cartridges. It got a modern viewfinder camera design, with a CdS electronic meter eye for automatic exposure in aperture priority mode. Aperture can be set to 2.8, f4.8, f8 and f13.5. The symbol for the actual aperture setting shows up thru a small window on top of the lens barrel, the lever for setting aperture is located on the opposite side of the barrel. The symbols are explained on the camera bottom. The camera can be switched from automatic mode to flash sync shutter speeds 1/125 (switch in mid position) and 1/30 seconds. Automatic shutter speed ranges from 1/2 to 1/125 seconds. In automatic mode without batteries shutter speed is B. Film speed can be switched from ASA 100 to ASA 50.

The lens is a pretty three-element Meyer-Optik Görlitz Domiplan 2.8/45. Its distance scale shows the distance in meters (1m to infinity) and as symbols. The camera has a hot shoe on top just over the lens, a cable release socket as well on top, and a tripod socket on the bottom.
The Pentacon electra 2 has a warning lamp for automatic shutter speeds below 1/30 as additional feature.
