Paxette was a line of viewfinder and rangefinder cameras made by the Braun company in Nuremberg, Germany in the middle part of the 20th century. These cameras were of high quality, with excellent optics. Some of the models in this line had interchangeable lenses, something that was notable since these cameras all used Prontor leaf shutters, rather than the focal plane shutters typically used on such cameras (like the Leica). The interchangeable-lens models, which offered several different lines of lenses made by different noted lens manufacturers, included sizes from 35mm (moderate wide angle) to 135mm (telephoto). There were also Paxette SLR models, the Paxette Reflex.

Revision as of 00:07, 29 March 2011

The Paxette cameras were a line of viewfinder and rangefinder cameras made by the Braun company in Nuremberg, Germany in the 1950s. These cameras were of high quality, with excellent optics. Even the viewfinder models (most of the Paxette I models) may be mistaken for rangefinder cameras, as they have a second window in an appropriate place, which is however an extinction meter[1].

The Paxette II and Super Paxette II models had interchangeable lenses. The lenses use an M39 thread mount; however, the cameras have a longer lens register than Leica cameras, largely because they use leaf shutters (of the Prontor family) rather than focal plane shutters, so the lenses are not interchangeable between Paxettes and Leicas. Not all early Paxette lenses are rangefinder coupled. Lenses were made for the Paxettes by several noted lens manufacturers, in lengths from 35mm (moderate wide angle) to 200mm (telephoto).

The Super Paxette line, introduced in 1956, included a coupled rangefinder; some models even had a coupled selenium meter. There were also Paxette SLR models, the Paxette Reflex.
