PQI, or "picture quality improvement" is a feature once offered on some APS film cameras, in which certain shooting data is recorded onto the magnetic coating which is integrated into the strip of film. In theory, information about whether the flash fired, or which orientation the camera was held, would help automated photofinishing equipment produce a print with better exposure balance.

In some respects PQI anticipated the EXIF metadata which is now universal in digital images.
