The Nikon D80 is a digital single reflex (DSLR) camera that was the successor to the popular D70s and predecessor to the D90.

It was the latest Nikon DSLR to use the CCD image sensor before Nikon launched the D3 and D300 (both of which use CMOS sensors developed with Sony).

The D80 is classed as an 'enthusiast' DSLR, with an additional LCD on the top plate and a sub command dial, making manual exposure quicker and easier to use and as such it is not uncommon to find professional photographers having a D80 as a second body.

Other features above the entry level D40(x) include

  • A built in focus motor (for older Nikkor af lenses),
  • Depth of Field Preview,
  • Remote cord terminal,
  • Mains input terminal,
  • Connections for a battery-grip (mbd-80) to allow an additional battery, also has secondary shutter release and both command dials
  • A/V output terminal
  • 11 area AF
  • Exposure delay (extends the time between the mirror and shutter movements, greatly reducing vibration in slower shutter speeds)
  • Removable protective cover for rear lcd
