The Mamiya U was introduced in 1981. This is one of the last few 35mm cameras released by Mamiya. An auto focus version was released in 1983.

Features

This is a very small compact camera. Uses common 1.5v AAA batteries. A battery check feature is also available. It uses a zone focus system with four distance settings 1m, 1.5m, 3m, inf. (3ft, 5ft, 10ft, inf). The electronically controlled shutter ranges from 1/8 to 1/500. There is an audible underexposure warning chirp. The front of the camera body has a switch when pushed upwards release the electronic flash. Daylight flash is reccommended for up to 1.5m. The self timer is operated by sliding down the dedicated button on the front. is on a 12 second delay. The lens is protected by a sliding cover with the switch on top of the camera. Film advance is by a thumb wheel dial. The camera is primarily made of plastic, except for the camera back and the manual film rewind crank on the bottom of the camera.

Issues

Notable problems with the camera is the ease in which the protruding plastic that covers the shutter button breaks. During use the flash head tends to drain the batteries if it is no retracted back into the body.
