During the 1960s Japanese boom for half-frame cameras, Mamiya offered this c.1967 model with full autoexposure controlled by the selenium meter cell around the lens. The "rapid" name referred to the 35mm Rapid film cassette system used by a few manufacturers before 126 film eclipsed it as the preferred "easy loading" option in consumer-level cameras.
