The Leica S system was launched in 2008. Leica camera decided to abandon the R system and, instead, develop the completely new S digital SLR system with a high resolution Kodak CCD sensor larger than the 35mm format. The sensor measures 30×45mm with 37.5 megapixel resolution. An extensive range of autofocus lenses has been developed.

The camera is effectively medium format, although somewhat smaller than most other medium format cameras.
