C. P. Goerzwas founded in 1886 by Carl Paul Goerz. Originally, they made mathematical tools for schools. From 1888 they started making cameras and lenses. Goerz is known primarily for the Anschuetz stut-folding cameras, theit Dagor lenses and their Tengor and Tenax cameras, later continued by Zeiss Ikon.

In 1895 Goerz had founded a branch in New York that was to become the C. P. Goerz American Optical co in 1905. This company continued to operate independently in the US untill 1972. Goertz's main production was for the German and Austrian military untill the end of of the first world war.

In 1908, the Goerz Photochemisches Werk Gmbh was founded in Berlin-Zehlendorf. This company produced rollfilm and films for the movie-industry.

In 1926 (German branch of) Goerz merged with ICA, Contessa-Nettel and Ernemann to form Zeiss Ikon. This fusion had major consequences for the company; the Carl Zeiss company held a majority stake in the new company and demanded the other firms end their lens production. This was the end of the famed Dagor lenses (at least in Europe).
