The '''Canon FD 50mm f/1.8''' was the default "normal" lens on [[Canon]] FD systems.  While its higher-end sibling, the [[Canon FD 50mm f/1.4]] set the standard for image quality in the FD system, the f/1.8 was a very capable lens.

Due to their high quality and low cost, and the fact that these lenses were good performers in low light, there were more of them sold than any other Canon FD lens. Now there are so many out there that a Canon FD 50mm f/1.8, in excellent condition, can be had these days for mere pocket change ([http://search.ebay.com/FD-50mm-1-8 eBay]).

The Canon FD 50mm f/1.8 is the default "normal" lens on Canon FD systems. It has six glass elements in four groups. The example illustrated on the left side has the original FD mount, with a 'breech-lock' (i.e a twist-ring to fasten the lens on), the example on the right side has the 'New FD' mount without ring. Four versions of the lens with breech-lock mount are listed at the Canon Camera Museum,[1] and one in the bayonet New FD fitting.[2]

More of them were sold than any other Canon FD lens (mostly with a camera).
