In 1977 [[Alpa]] was still producing its premium, hand-assembled, [[Alpa 11 series | Alpa 11si]] in Switzerland. But the company made an odd effort to branch out into the mid-price [[SLR]] segment, by collaborating with [[Chinon]] to offer the '''Si 2000'''.

This was a restyled version of the [[Chinon CE II Memotron]], including its use of the [[42mm screw lenses | M42 thread mount]]. Advertising boasted of the sturdy die-cast zinc top panel, which was specific to the Alpa version. The Chinon offered an unusual autoexposure scheme, where shutter timing is set automatically using a light reading taken in the instant after the lens stops down (there is no [[open-aperture metering]]).
