The software application darktable is described by its authors as "an open source photography workflow application and RAW developer." The name (styled as lowercase) refers to its combination of "a virtual light table and darkroom for photographers."

The application can import many raw formats and demosaic them; catalog and tag images (i.e. serve as a "Digital Asset Manager"); then apply many kinds of adjustments affecting image tonality, color, lens distortion, and so on. It is not oriented towards extensive localized image editing, of the kind possible with software such as GIMP. In this sense the two free-software applications might be used in parallel in the same way that Lightroom and Photoshop are complementary within the Adobe suite of proprietary software.

Versions of darktable are available for several Linux distributions, Mac OS X (including Yosemite), FreeBSD, and Solaris. There is no native Windows version. As of 2015 active development of the software was still under way, by a team primarily based in Europe.
