It's time to look back.
 +
 +
The website was founded by User:Lbstone on Oct. 27, 2004; here is the first of his edits.
 +
 +
I joined on Sep. 18, 2005; here is my first edit and my first contri to the Main Page.
 +
 +
Only a few people will remember the condition of the website at the time; there were less than 100,000 hits to the Main Page (now 1,355,293).
 +
 +
Since then, I've made 43,174 edits out of a grand total of 96,728. I wonder how many words or bytes that makes.
 +
 +
Here were a few high points of my time here:
 +
* Started the Category system on Dec. 16, 2005;
 +
* Blocked my first vandal on Mar. 9, 2006 and blocked many more since;
 +
* Joined by U. kulick on Apr. 15, 2006, who has since made 10,000 to 15,000 edits and managed the Flickr pool;
 +
* Welcomed Hoary on May 6, 2006, who later made 3,000 to 4,000 contris and helped making important admin decisions;
 +
* Participated in the only documented Camerapedia street demonstration, that successfully moved the authorities into upgrading to Mediawiki 1.6;
 +
* Encouraged by this success, asked for another technical favour that had to wait for four years;
 +
* Made the draft for the new main page in August 2006, installed on Sep. 10, 2006;
 +
* Flickr image template created by U. kulick in Aug. 2006, to make image insertion easier;
 +
* Took the decision to allow non-free images in Sep. 2006, to make it easier to ask people to loan pictures for non-commercial use;
 +
* Participated in Oct. 2006 in a failed attempt to make the site multilingual;
 +
* Created image right tags in Nov. 2007 and encouraged their use ever since;

 +
* Tolerated to work under Mediawiki 1.6 when Wikipedia was at 1.16;

Copyright rules
According to WP's French copyright law, the collective and anonymous works are protected for 70 years after the date of publication.

According to WP's Japan copyright law, the collective and anonymous works are protected for 50 years after the date of publication, and it seems that the pictures published before 1969 were protected for 10 years only (to be checked).

Quotes from the licensing page at Wikimedia Commons:

"Most important is article 7, which sets the term of duration of the protections granted by the Convention. The Convention sets a minimal term of 50 years after the life of the authors (subject to some exceptions). However, each country is free to set longer terms.

In any case, the term shall be governed by the legislation of the country where protection is claimed; however, unless the legislation of that country otherwise provides, the term shall not exceed the term fixed in the country of origin of the work."

and

"For example, if a person in the United Kingdom uploads a picture that has been saved off a French website to the Commons server the upload is covered by UK, French and US copyright law. In order for a photograph to be acceptable for upload to Commons it must be public domain in France, the United Kingdom and the United States, or there must be an acceptable copyright licence for the photograph which covers the UK, US and France."

"US: Anything published before March 1, 1989 with no copyright notice ("©", "Copyright" or "Copr.") plus the year of publication (may be omitted in some cases) plus the copyright owner (or pseudonym) is in the public domain."

"France: if the work is anonymous, pseudonymous or collective, it is 70 years following the publication of the work (unless the authors named themselves)"

"Japan: If the work is anonymous or pseudonymous, the copyright lasts for 50 years after the publication or the death of the author, whichever is the earlier (article 52). The copyrights of the works in names of organizations expire in 50 years after the publication, or in 50 years after the creation if the works are not published within 50 years after the creation (article 53)."

France is the most restrictive, and allows me to publish any unsigned or collective original documentation earlier than 1936. (to be checked)

Camerapedia nostalgia

It's time to look back.

The website was founded by User:Lbstone on Oct. 27, 2004; here is the first of his edits.
