Scovill Manufacturing Co. was founded as Abel Porter & Co. in 1802. It was based in Waterbury, Connecticut. In the early days of photography it began making silver-plated copper sheets for daguerreotype imaging, as well as other photographic goods. Scovill was the second largest jobbing trade company for photography supply in the U.S.A. . In 1871 it bought American Optical Co. . The budget versions of American Optical's cameras were sold under the Scovill brand. In 1889 one leading officer of Scovill bought the company and named it Scovill & Adams. In 1902 it was merged with the largest U.S. distributor, E. & H.T. Anthony. Together they were Anthony & Scovill.
