The term rangefinder base is used generally to describe the focusing accuracy of a rangefinder camera. The term can be used to describe two different measures:

  • Actual rangefinder base - is a measure of the physical distance between the viewports for the viewfinder and the rangefinder.
  • Effective rangefinder base - is a mathematically corrected number which adjusts the actual rangefinder base by the magnification ratio of the viewfinder.

The effective rangefinder base is considered to be a more accurate representation of a camera's focusing accuracy. In either case, a longer rangefinder base is better.
