1984-2001.  Introduced in 1984 as a replacement for the original Nikon FM2.  Nikon changed the focusing screens to the type II Brightscreen screens and officially made the flash synch speed 1/250th, instead of 1/200th.  The X200 setting was removed.  Also, the hot shoe was of a slightly different design with a squared off center cutout for the base of the hot shoe. Mirror box was redesigned to add a light trap that flipped up when the mirror flipped down. Fully mechanical.  Takes two PX76 batteries or one CR 1/3N lithium battery. 1-1/4000 sec shutter speed range, plus BISO range 12-6400. Interchangeable focusing screens.  Can be used with the Type III screens from the FM3a. Optional MD-12 motor drive.  Can be used with older MD-11, but timer circuit will not work for the meter. Available in either black or chrome finish.

The Nikon FM2N, sold 1984–2001, was introduced to replace the original Nikon FM2. Nikon changed the focusing screens to the type II Brightscreen screens and officially made the flash synch speed 1/250th, instead of 1/200th. The X200 setting was removed. Also, the hot shoe was of a slightly different design, with a squared-off center cutout for the base of the hot shoe. The mirror box was redesigned to add a light trap that flipped up when the mirror flipped down. The camera is fully mechanical; its meter (and only its meter) requires two PX76 batteries or one CR 1/3N lithium battery. There is a 1–1/4000 sec shutter speed range, plus B; and an ISO range of 12–6400. Focusing screens are interchangeable, and Type III screens for the FM3a can be used. A MD-12 motor drive is an option; the camera can be used with the older MD-11, but timer circuit will not work for the meter. It was available in either black or chrome finish.
