1984-2001. Introduced in 1984 as a replacement for the original Nikon FM2. Nikon changed the focusing screens to the type II Brightscreen screens and officially made the flash synch speed 1/250th, instead of 1/200th. The X200 setting was removed. Also, the hot shoe was of a slightly different design with a squared off center cutout for the base of the hot shoe. Mirror box was redesigned to add a light trap that flipped up when the mirror flipped down. Fully mechanical. Takes two PX76 batteries or one CR 1/3N lithium battery. 1-1/4000 sec shutter speed range, plus B. ISO range 12-6400. Interchangeable focusing screens. Can be used with the Type III screens from the FM3a. Optional MD-12 motor drive. Can be used with older MD-11, but timer circuit will not work for the meter. Available in either black or chrome finish.
