The Hermagis Cinema projection lens comprises of a lens holder and focussing unit with tangential drive and a slide-in, smooth-walled lens tube which is marked off with its focal length. It seems that the lens tube, which holds a lens of Petzval design, was interchangeable in the lens mount. Early lenses were set in fully brass-bound tubes, later lenses had the brass tube replaced by nickel or other alloys. The serial number of the lens is marked on the side of the front lens element mount. As is common with Hermagis lenses, the sides of the lens cells are inscribed 'Hermagis Paris' with focal length and year of production (all in pencil).[1]

In the early 1900s Hermagis also reputedly manufactured the cinema projection lenses sold by and branded as Pathé.[2] By the late 1920s the production of all Hermagis-branded projection lenses occurred by SOM. These lenses are marked 'Hermagis SOM'.

  2. Discussion thread in Galerie Photo.—While it is documented that Pathé drew on Hermagis lenses for their 9.5mm film cameras (as well as Zeiss and Krauss), an examination of two Pathé Frére Paris Extra-Lumineux 150mm projector lenses (both Photographica Collection Dirk HR Spennemann) showed no markings on the sides of the front cells or any other indication that the Extra-Lumineux projection lenses were also made by Hermagis.
