Francis Frith (1822-1898) was a successful businessman from Liverpool who could afford to retire early in 1856 and began traveling to Egypt and the Middle East. He was a talented photographer so that the photos he made on his trip received a high level of recognition. He sold prints of his stereo shots, wrote an illustrated book "Egypt and Palestine", made a successful business of his photography, traveled again to the Middle East to make further photos, wrote several illustrated books about the journey, became a main landscape photographer of his time, and founded Frith & Co. which became a leading photography company until 1870 when it already had made 1 million images of Britain and Europe which were sold as stereo cards, illustrated books and postcards. Of course this big company had great influence on early postcard aesthetics.
