Focus shift is a fault of mainly fast lenses, i.e. those fast lenses with spherical abberation, see lens fault corrections.

Focus shift means that the focusing of such lenses changes by changing aperture., thus making open-aperture focusing with SLR impossible for exposures at reduced aperture. SLR focusing of such a lens must be done at the wanted reduced aperture.
