Focus shift is a fault of mainly fast lenses, i.e. those fast lenses with spherical abberation, see lens fault corrections.

Focus shift means that the focusing of such lenses changes by changing aperture., thaus making open-aperture focusing with SLR impossible for exposures at reduced aperture. Focusing must be don at the reduced aperture.
