A Japanese company called Daitoh Optical Co. or Daitō Kōgaku Seisakusho (probably 大東光学製作所) is mentioned in McKeown. A series of basic cameras dated around 1967 is attributed to this company, including one called Grace. The only other camera mentioned is the Grace Six 6×6 folder, with an helical focusing Erinar Anastigmat 75/3.5 lens and both eye level and waist level finders in a chrome top plate. The Gotex 6×6 folder made by Kigawa exactly corresponds to this description, and Erinar is a lens brand usually found on Kigawa cameras. Moreover, Kigawa made a 6×6 TLR called Graceflex in 1952. It is highly probable that the Grace Six was attributed to Daitoh because there was a confusion around the Grace name. This page at photographica-world.de attributes both the Grace Six and the Graceflex to Daitoh, surely for the same reason.

Latest revision as of 06:00, 5 February 2023

Daitoh Optical Co. or Daitō Kōgaku Seisakusho[1] was apparently a Japanese camera maker. Its English name is reportedly inscribed on the Grace, an inexpensive 6×6 camera related to the Ponix.[2]

Other cameras attributed to the company by McKeown are the Shumy (a probable successor of the Ponix), the Glitt 35 (a 35mm viewfinder camera) and the Petit (a subminiature). The same source also mentions the Grace Six, but this is probably a mistake and this camera is certainly a name variant or an evolution of the Gotex, made by Kigawa.[3]

Notes

 1. A plausible writing would be 大東光学製作所.
 2. Former post about the Grace in a toXpose forum.
 3. McKeown, pp. 239–40. Thre is probably a confusion because of the "Grace" name. Kigawa also made a 6×6 TLR called Graceflex in 1952. This page at photographica-world.de (archived) attributes both the Grace Six and the Graceflex to Daitoh, but this source is inaccurate for Japanese cameras.
