Emil Busch's Busch Vademecum was a lens kit in a casket that contained a set of different lens elements in rings, plus a lens barrel with inbuilt variable iris diaphragm. The user could put one lens element ring onto each opening of the lens tube, and could remove the lens elements to use another combination of elements instead. With this lens kit the user had a kind of variable lens, with just the inconvenience of unmounting, disassembling, reassembling and remounting for each change of lens focus.
