Awcam - White balance also refers to analog (film) imaging. Gossen and Minolta (IIRC) made color temperature meters that could be used with decamired filters to change the white balance of the image recorded on film. Changing white balance involved the use of these somewhat cumbersome filters. I remember using devices called variacs to adjust the voltage on studio lights for particularly exacting clients. -huffy49 (John)

Of course you're right, I should have mentioned film being balanced for different light conditions, and thus also having a white balance that may need correction. As you say, variacs (variable auto-transformers) do exactly that by changing the voltage and so changing the filament temperature.
I put in a film paragraph, but I think there's still a bit to add here.
