Here's the short answer Provided the camera body lens mounting flange diameter is 54mm or less, then Fujica lenses with an aperture indexing tab should fit. Of the M42 cameras in my collection, the Fujica lenses fit a Pentax Spotmatic F, and Yashica TL Electro X, but do not properly mount on a Praktica LTL. Hope this helps. John Bear - 29/10/2015

1. The original text on metering was actually a correct synopsis.

Exposure is indicated by seven LEDs, where the three lights on either side of centre indicate whole stops under or over exposure. LEDs glow through a range of brightness levels, which allows some degree of sensitivity to the meter readings.

For example -

  • If only the centre LED is lit, exposure is correct.
  • If the centre LED is bright and say the one above dim, this shows exposure is a quarter of a stop over.
  • If two LEDs equally lit (say the centre and one above), this shows exposure is half a stop over.
  • If the centre LED is dim and the one above bright, this shows exposure is three quarter of a stop over.
  • If the LED above centre is lit, exposure is one stop over, etc.

This is clearly stated in the camera's user manual, and a key feature of the ST801's unique metering system.

Thus as originally stated - The LEDs ... show 3 stops over and under-exposure in 1/4 stop increments.

2. The original text on the terms Auto and Manual Fujinon lenses refer to the aperture control, as in it is either Automatic or Manual. Auto, Automatic, and Manual are not specifically stated on the lenses. Fuji made ordinary M42 lenses before the introduction of the ST801, and these don't have an indexing tab (so the correction is actually erroneous).

About 1), the main point I wanted to clarify was that there were only 7 meter LEDs. For someone who does not have the camera or manual in hand, the earlier text might give the impression each 1/4 stop had its own separate LED. If you'd like to clarify the dimmer/brighter scheme for 1/4 f/stop increments, please go ahead. For myself I'm not certain it has a practical significance today, given the likely drift in calibration of a mechanical shutter or a meter circuit of this vintage.
On 2) what is the clearest way to name the M42 lens series with the aperture tab? At one time I thought they were all 'EBC' series but I find that's not entirely true. Maybe just "M42 Fujinons with an aperture tab." --Vox (talk) 18:36, 9 November 2015 (CST)

"I'm not certain it has a practical significance today". I think I've missed the point of camera-wiki. Apologies. I thought it was about a historically accurate record of past cameras, and that details of how the first camera to use viewfinder LEDs was intended to work would be highly relevant. --Johnbear (talk) 06:40, 25 December 2015 (CST)
