The Jupiter 3 is an 50 mm f/1.5 lens made in the Soviet Union. It is based on the design of the Carl Zeiss Sonnar 50mm f/1.5 which is a Ludwig Bertele design from 1932.

Initially this lens was called ZK (Sonnar Krasnogorsk) and released in 1948, after rebuilding the Carl Zeiss factory and using remnants of Jena glass. It changed the name to Jupiter-3 around 1950 and by 1954 it was made of Soviet glass. While originally designed for Contax/Kiev mount, it was adapted to Leica Thread Mount/Zorki, Leica M or M42 mounts

Several models exist, made by KMZ (1948-55), ZOMZ (1955-74) or Valdai (1975-88).

On 2018 a new edition of the lens was made in KMZ factory and sold by Lomography-Zenit as New Jupiter 3+ in Leica M39 mount. [1] This new issue of the lens uses multi-coating, is made of aluminium and can focus to 0.7m.
