Help:Image-by categories

Whenever a page editor enters a name into the image_by= field of the Flickr image template, it adds that wiki page to a Category "image by (user name)."

The purpose of this is to let visitors see more images contributed by the same photographer, on other wiki pages. The page listing these typically displays links to the photographer's Flickr stream, and can be edited to include other information.

One hiccup in this system is that any variations in the form, spelling, capitalization, etc. of the name will create duplicate categories. For example, a photo contributor's Flickr account may indicate a real name, "john nielson' and and a Flickr screen name "Surfman3000." To avoid duplicating categories, we recommend filling the image_by= field in a standard way: the photographer's real name (if their account shows it publicly), capitalized normally: "John Nielson."

Also, you should check the list of image-by categories already used, and enter attributions in the form already used in an existing category.

In cases where you wish to remove a duplicate category and move its pages to the correct one, it will be necessary to visit each page and manually edit the image_by= field in each Flickr image template.
